You Look Good

Whether plastic surgery is a personal choice or a necessary medical procedure, you can trust Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center plastic surgeons to help you look and feel your best.

We offer most cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive procedures, including:

  • Abdominoplasty, also known as a “tummy tuck”
  • Body contouring
  • Breast reconstruction, reduction and implant revision
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Facelifts
  • Liposuction
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Skin cancer removal
  • Skin lesion removal

Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss

Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight through diet, exercise, medication or bariatric surgery have unique needs. This might include removing excess skin and tissue around the face, neck, belly, arms, thighs and buttocks, as well as breast surgery to eliminate sagging.

  • We recommend waiting at least 12 months after bariatric surgery before having plastic surgery. This gives your body time to recover and arrive at a stable, healthy weight.
  • If you’ve lost weight through nonsurgical methods, we also recommend being at a stable weight for at least six months
  • Keep in mind that not all procedures can be done at once.

Our team provides comprehensive care before, during and after your surgery. We work closely with your primary care physician and other specialists as needed to ensure the best possible outcome.

Preparing for Plastic Surgery

No matter why you’re having plastic surgery, it’s essential to be in good health. You can do this through:

  • Good nutrition and hydration - this is especially important for patients who have lost large amounts of weight
  • Exercise
  • Not smoking or quitting if you do smoke

You can also prepare for your consultation by thinking about your expectations for surgery. What are you most concerned about? What kind of results are you looking for? This will help your surgeon understand your goals and develop a care plan that meets your needs.

About Chance Kaplan, MD

Chance Kaplan, MD, Plastic SurgeonI am a plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience. I’ve been recognized as one of the Top 3 cosmetic surgeons in Lancaster County by the Lancaster Newspapers’ Readers’ Choice Awards. I began my career as a U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officer. After completing medical school, a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in plastic surgery, I served as chief of plastic surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Texas. There, and later as an officer in the Army Reserve serving in multiple combat deployments, I provided cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to the men and women in our armed forces.

Understanding a cosmetic, plastic or surgical procedure fully and how it can help is essential for patients to decide what is right for them. Your initial consultation with me is very important.

Personalized Education and Support

Obesity is a health condition. Our program provides essential nutritional and mental health counseling to help people explore the complex mix of environmental, behavioral and genetic factors that cause obesity. Success requires a commitment to the program and engaging with our supportive community.

Our comprehensive weight management program begins with an in-person visit with a surgeon to determine if weight loss surgery is right for you. If you are a good candidate, the program includes:

  • Diet and exercise resources
  • Mental health counseling
  • Support groups at Lancaster Medical Center
  • Plastic surgery consults if needed

If a nonsurgical approach is best for you, you can meet with the obesity medicine physician on our team. Dr. Daron Kahn provides a comprehensive intake and evaluation of weight history to identify specific targets for intervention. He uses a tailored, multidisciplinary approach for each patient to provide a dietary, social work and, if appropriate, medication therapy treatment plan that includes both oral and injectable options. Weight management is a lifelong process, so continued follow-up is paramount for success.

Our program is personalized, so all your visits are one-on-one appointments with our providers, not group visits. Virtual visits are available, but our entire program is based on building a relationship between you and your surgeon.

When is Bariatric Surgery the Answer?

Bariatric surgery might be right for you if:

  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher, or you are more than 100 pounds overweight
  • You have one or more obesity-related conditions, including high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, and a BMI of 35 or higher
  • Your BMI is 30 to 34.9, and you have not been able to achieve substantial or long-term weight loss or improve obesity-related conditions using nonsurgical methods.*

*Your insurance may not cover surgery at this BMI. Insurance is screened before your first consult to determine coverage.
