Comprehensive Breast Care

Since 2008, Dr. Marnie Kaplan has been helping women with cancerous and noncancerous breast concerns make informed treatment decisions. Her top priority is individualized, patient-centered care for women with breast concerns, including newly diagnosed breast cancer, benign breast lumps, breast-related genetic testing and long-term follow-up for those with a history of breast cancer. She offers ultrasound-guided biopsies in the office, so every patient receives personalized care, quick diagnosis and treatment, and comprehensive services during one appointment.

Dr. Kaplan specializes in lumpectomies and skin and nipple-sparing mastectomies but is also an expert in oncoplastic surgery. Oncoplastic procedures combine the removal of cancerous tissues with cosmetic surgery, so there is often no need for additional surgeries. That means, while cancer care is first, she works with each patient to learn how they want to look after breast surgery. This can range from simply hiding the scar tissue after a lumpectomy to beginning the first steps of reconstructive surgery.

At Penn State Health Medical Group – Noll Drive, she’s part of a team that just happens to include her husband, Dr. Chance Kaplan, a plastic surgeon. Together, they streamline breast cancer surgery and reconstruction, resulting in less time in the operating room and fewer complications.

New cancer diagnosis patients and those seeking a second opinion will be able to schedule an appointment within 5 days.

Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss

Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight through diet, exercise, medication or bariatric surgery have unique needs. This might include removing excess skin and tissue around the face, neck, belly, arms, thighs and buttocks, as well as breast surgery to eliminate sagging.

  • We recommend waiting at least 12 months after bariatric surgery before having plastic surgery. This gives your body time to recover and arrive at a stable, healthy weight.
  • If you’ve lost weight through nonsurgical methods, we also recommend being at a stable weight for at least six months
  • Keep in mind that not all procedures can be done at once.

Our team provides comprehensive care before, during and after your surgery. We work closely with your primary care physician and other specialists as needed to ensure the best possible outcome.

Preparing for Plastic Surgery

No matter why you’re having plastic surgery, it’s essential to be in good health. You can do this through:

  • Good nutrition and hydration - this is especially important for patients who have lost large amounts of weight
  • Exercise
  • Not smoking or quitting if you do smoke

You can also prepare for your consultation by thinking about your expectations for surgery. What are you most concerned about? What kind of results are you looking for? This will help your surgeon understand your goals and develop a care plan that meets your needs.

Meet Our Experts

About Chance Kaplan, MD

Chance Kaplan, MD, Plastic SurgeonI am a plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience. I’ve been recognized as one of the Top 3 cosmetic surgeons in Lancaster County by the Lancaster Newspapers’ Readers’ Choice Awards. I began my career as a U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officer. After completing medical school, a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in plastic surgery, I served as chief of plastic surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Texas. There, and later as an officer in the Army Reserve serving in multiple combat deployments, I provided cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to the men and women in our armed forces.

Understanding a cosmetic, plastic or surgical procedure fully and how it can help is essential for patients to decide what is right for them. Your initial consultation with me is very important.

About Marnie Kaplan, MD

Dr. Marnie Kaplan

I’m a fellowship-trained breast surgeon who manages and treats benign and malignant breast disease. I specialize in breast cancer risk management, skin and nipple-sparing mastectomies, lumpectomies and ultrasound-guided biopsies. When I was doing my general surgery residency, I found that many women with breast problems preferred a female surgeon. As one of only a few women in the general surgery program, I decided that my skills were most needed in the field of breast surgery.

Every patient is an individual to me, and I am dedicated to helping each woman make informed decisions about treatment based on all available options.
