SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Nursing Professional Development Practitioner supports the quality of care provided to patients by staff through optimal orientation programs, ongoing evaluation of competence, and support of lifelong learning. The Nursing Professional Development Practitioner has in-depth nursing knowledge, clinical expertise, and knowledge of adult learning. Nursing Professional Development Practitioner is responsible for planning, conducting needs assessment and evaluating orientation and staff development programs for nursing and clinical personnel. They will identify outcomes of educational interventions based on input from learners and stakeholders, evidence, regulations and organizational goals. Nursing Professional Development Practitioner promotes relevant professional development opportunities and mentorship for members of the department of nursing at all levels to assist with the achievement of personal and professional goals. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES- The percentage of time spent performing essential functions is 95%. Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties: 

  • Assesses gaps in knowledge, skills, and/or practice to identify learning needs for assigned unit or population through data collection, formal and informal assessments, observation, and stakeholder collaboration, with Director oversight. 
  •  Plans, implements, coordinates, and facilitates educational interventions, in collaboration with the learner and stakeholders, using evidence-based modalities that address the learning needs and support achievement of expected outcomes, with Director oversight. 
  •  Identifies outcomes of educational interventions based on input from learners and key stakeholders, evidence, regulations and organizational goals, with Director oversight. Evaluates value of educational interventions and programs based on achievement of outcomes, cost and return on investment. 
  • When appropriate, assists the Nurse Manager in achieving compliance with regulatory bodies through appropriate documentation of orientation and ongoing competence. 
  • Assists in the instruction of required courses (i.e. BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP), as identified by regulatory bodies, applicable to assigned clinical units. 
  • Recommends revisions to standards of nursing care and policies/procedures within area(s) of expertise, based on available evidence. 
  • Participates in organizational committees, serving as an informal leader and representative of the NPD department, as assigned by Director. 
  • Seeks opportunities to improve competence in the NPD specialty through engagement in educational activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Master's degree required. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • At least two (2) years' experience as a registered nurse.
  • Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse by the state of employment or holds a multistate RN license through the Interstate Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • AHA BLS before the end of the orientation period.
