Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our growing Neurosurgery team supporting Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading, PA. This position offers a dynamic blend of inpatient, outpatient, and surgical responsibilities, including first assisting in the operating room. 

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Nurse Practitioner seeking autonomy while working within a highly supportive and collaborative APP team in a comprehensive neurosurgical practice. The role provides exposure to a wide variety of neurosurgical cases and allows for active involvement in both patient management and surgical procedures. Call and weekends required. Requires an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner degree and RN First Assist Certification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide outpatient clinic coverage for new and established patients
  • Perform inpatient rounding and consult evaluations
  • First assist in the operating room for a wide variety of neurosurgical procedures
  • Participate in surgical cases alongside neurosurgeons and residents
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, residents, and APP colleagues
  • Participate in shared call coverage as outlined by the team

Surgical & Procedural Experience
This role includes hands-on procedural and surgical experience, including:
  • First assisting in the operating room
  • Shunt taps
  • Lumbar punctures (LPs)
  • External ventricular drain (EVD) placement
  • Assisting with a broad range of cranial and spine neurosurgical procedures
OR responsibilities may vary depending on resident coverage and team structure.
