SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Medicine clinical pharmacists are integral members of the interdisciplinary care teams in high-acuity settings, where rapid decision-making and expert pharmacologic support are essential. These pharmacists work closely with both ICU and emergency medicine teams in fast-paced, unpredictable environments managing complex medication regimens.
In the Emergency Department, pharmacists are responsible for both adult and pediatric patients and are embedded in frontline care, playing a crucial role where expectations include both clinical and operational responsibilities. These include participating in stroke alerts, cardiac arrests, and adult and pediatric trauma resuscitations where they provide immediate, evidence-based recommendations for drug selection, dosing, and administration across all age groups. They also provide hands on medication preparation and dispensing at the bedside for resuscitation events.
In the adult ICUs, pharmacists manage intricate pharmacotherapy for our sickest patients across the medical, neuro, heart and vascular, and surgical intensive care units. They attend daily bedside rounds with teams of intensivists, advanced practice providers, resident physicians, medical students, and nursing staff where they provide evidence based medical recommendations to optimize care of our sickest patients. They are key contributors to sedation and analgesia protocols, antimicrobial stewardship, renal dose adjustments, and therapeutic drug monitoring. ICU pharmacists also play a critical role in code response and provide consultative support to residents and providers during off-hours.
