Surgery to Restore Blood Flow to the Brain

The Penn State Health Cerebral Revascularization Program

Cerebral artery bypass, also known as revascularization, is an advanced neurosurgical procedure that restores blood flow to the brain by redirecting blood around blocked, narrowed or damaged arteries. This surgery is used to treat several conditions that put the brain at risk of cerebral ischemia or ischemic stroke, including moyamoya disease, intracranial stenosis, cerebral aneurysm and related conditions. The operation uses a blood vessel from another part of the body or reroutes a donor artery from the scalp to the brain. The arteries are surgically joined to supplement or replace blood flow in that area.

Advanced Diagnostic and Imaging

We use the latest diagnostic and imaging technologies to diagnose brain conditions and provide prompt, effective treatment. These tools enhance our ability to evaluate blood flow in the brain and perform the safest, most effective surgery.

Access to the Latest Research

Our neurosurgeons and neurologists participate in clinical trials to determine the best way to treat intracranial stenosis, moyamoya disease and other neurological conditions. You may be eligible to participate and have access to the latest treatment options before they are widely available.
