Why Choose Penn State Children’s Hospital for Adolescent Medicine

Young girls and teens deserve accurate information about their reproductive health questions and concerns. Our multidisciplinary team of experts is committed to providing honest, respectful gynecology care to the girls and young women who need our expertise for continued reproductive health.

Well-woman Care for Young Adults

Well-woman gynecology care helps ensures your teen’s reproductive system is healthy and functioning as it should be. Most younger girls won’t need a pelvic exam, but some issues may require an external exam that requires examining their genitals, which are located on the outside of their body.

Our experts take the time to make your teen as comfortable as possible. We listen carefully to your teen’s concerns and explain each aspect of the examination in advance. If she is sexually active, we offer information and access to sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment if needed.

Contraception

Understanding the risks and benefits of each form of contraception is an important part of making an informed decision. The team at Penn State Health understands that discussing contraception and safe-sex practices can be an uncomfortable, intimidating experience for many adolescents. Our specialists create an atmosphere of trust and respect that allows teens and young adults to share information, ask questions and understand their options for birth control and protection against sexually transmitted disease.

An intrauterine device (IUD) containing progesterone may be used as birth control or treatment for heavy, painful periods. If desired, the device can be implanted using anesthesia or under sedation in the operating room.
