Position Overview:
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine, and Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital is seeking a Pediatric Critical Care Physician to join our team of 11 board-certified pediatric intensivists.
Clinical and Program Highlights:
Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Pediatric Critical Care Physician to join the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of 11 intensivists practicing in a high-acuity, 18-bed multidisciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with an integrated Pediatric Cardiac Care Unit, supported by an adjacent 18-bed Intermediate Care Unit that allows for continued programmatic growth. The PICU provides the full spectrum of pediatric critical care, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and supports a wide range of advanced clinical programs such as cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, Level I trauma, and stem cell transplantation. Our patients represent a higher-than-average severity of illness nationally, yet we consistently achieve strong outcomes, including a lower-than-expected standardized mortality ratio, reflecting the quality, teamwork, and multidisciplinary collaboration that define our program.
The division is deeply committed to education and academic advancement, supporing a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship, an Advanced Practice Provider training program, and close collaboration with pediatric residency and subspecialty fellowship programs. Faculty appointments are through Penn State College of Medicine, with rank commensurate with experience, and there are robust opportunities for teaching, mentorship, and career development.
The program is actively engaged in national quality and research initiatives, including participation in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database, Virtual PICU Systems (VPS), Vizient, and Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS), with plans to join PC⁴. Our STS cardiothoracic surgery outcomes consistently demonstrate exceptional performance, including lower-than-expected rates of operative mortality, 30-day readmissions, complications, and length of stay. Similarly, our VPS data for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit show a statistically higher severity of illness among our patients, yet we continue to maintain a lower-than-expected standardized mortality ratio — a testament to the skill, teamwork, and quality of care delivered in our PICU.
Penn State Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, the adjacent College of Medicine, and the broader Penn State University main campus together offer outstanding opportunities for collaborative pediatric research. The Pediatric Critical Care Division is an active participant in national research consortia, including the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) Network and the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN). Faculty members are engaged in multicenter clinical trials focused on brain injury, lung injury, sepsis, and pediatric pharmacology. The Department of Pediatrics and the College of Medicine are committed to fostering the development of early-career investigators and advancing pediatric research through mentorship, infrastructure, and institutional support.
