Transfusion Medicine/Patient Blood Management Program Director, Clinical Pathology Faculty

HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA (USA). Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State University College of Medicine is seeking a fellowship-trained blood banking/transfusion medicine clinical pathologist. This is a non-tenure, clinician-educator or clinician-scientist, open rank, position for a start date of July 2026 or whenever the position is filled. We are a busy, clinical pathology practice at the quaternary care academic hub: the Hershey Medical Center, Penn State Cancer Institute and Penn State Children’s Hospital. Penn State Health is a multi-hospital system that additionally includes 4 separately staffed regional community hospitals. The role of Patient Blood Management (PBM) Program Director will account for an important component of the effort. A comprehensive PBM program will provide a patient-centered, systematic, evidence-based approach to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving the patient's own blood, while promoting patient safety and empowerment with a specialized focus on anemia management, multidisciplinary blood conservation, optimization of hemostasis/coagulation and patient centered care. Clinical effort will also include Clinical Pathology service coverage including Transfusion Medicine, Therapeutic Apheresis, Clinical Chemistry, and Hematology services. The successful candidate will practice at Hershey Medical Center.

The successful candidate will join a strong, collegial department of 42 faculty in Anatomic, Clinical and Experimental Pathology, with a new section of Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics. The department is in an exciting growth phase and has a fully accredited residency program of 16 positions and 4 accredited fellowships, including on in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. Faculty participate actively, with several leadership roles, in undergraduate and graduate medical education and graduate school teaching. The COM enrolls 150 students per class and boasts an innovative Curriculum. Support for collaborative and independent research, including intramural funding, professional development programs and faculty mentoring is available.


Board-certification or eligibility in Clinical Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine are required for the position, as is eligibility for medical licensure in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Patient Blood Management certified or certification eligible through AABB (Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies) or Joint Commission at the time of hire is preferred. Alternatively, certification may be obtained within the first year of assuming the position. The position does not offer J1 waiver or H1B sponsorship.
