Program Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Hospital Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center is a structured post-graduate training program for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs). The fellowship combines hands-on clinical experience, specialty rotations, and didactic education to prepare APPs for independent practice in hospital medicine.

Program Structure

The fellowship is divided into three core phases:

  1. Foundational Training – APPs receive structured onboarding, including clinical skills development, hospital workflows, EMR training, and supervised patient care.
  2. Core Clinical Rotations – Fellows gain in-depth experience in general inpatient medicine and specialty areas such as:
    • Addiction Medicine
    • Cardiology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Hematology/Oncology
    • Infectious Disease
    • Nephrology
    • Neurology
    • Palliative Care
    • Community Hospitalist
    • Hospitalist Cross-Coverage (Nights)
  3. Advanced Practice & Elective Rotations – Fellows tailor their experience by selecting electives in hospital medicine sub-specialties, including options such as ICU and interventional radiology.

Schedule & Work Hours

  • Primarily Monday – Friday
  • Night Rotations Required for cross-coverage experience (Monday – Thursday, 7 PM – 7 AM)
  • Weekend Work Required for some electives
