The Penn State Health Approach to EOSedge Imaging
EOSedge® is an advanced imaging platform that provides high-quality, low radiation full-body images of the spine and extremities. This technology helps physicians better understand each patient’s unique anatomy and alignment. With this information, providers can make more accurate diagnoses and create personalized treatment plans for a wide range of orthopedic conditions.
EOSedge imaging can help diagnose and manage conditions such as:
- Scoliosis
- Adult and pediatric spinal deformity
- Degenerative spine/disc disease (DDD)
- Adult spinal deformity (ASD)
- Limb-length differences
- Hip and knee osteoarthritis
- Hip dysplasia
- Balance and posture complications
- Bowlegs and knock-knees
- General orthopedic conditions
Low-dose imaging with high-resolution results
EOSedge follows the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) principle, delivering up to 80% less radiation than standard digital X-rays. Advanced features automatically adjust radiation levels based on your body. This is especially helpful for patients who need frequent imaging, such as children with scoliosis, while still providing clear, detailed images.
Full-body imaging in a natural, weight-bearing position
Unlike traditional imaging, EOSedge takes images while you are standing or sitting. This allows your care team to see how your body lines up when you are in a natural position and bearing your own weight. It gives a more complete and accurate picture of your posture and skeletal structure
What to expect during your EOSedge exam
Comfortable, quick, and efficient imaging
EOSedge is designed for most children and adults. During your exam, two X-ray scans are taken at the same time – one from the front and one from the side – while you are positioned on a platform.
Before: You may be asked to remove shoes, jewelry or metal objects before stepping onto the imaging platform.
During: You will stand or sit still while two scanning units move up and down to capture images of your body. The scan typically takes about 20–30 seconds.
After: Once imaging is complete, the technologist will help you step off the platform. Your images will then be processed for your physician to review.
How your doctor uses EOS imaging data
Your physician reviews your EOSedge images along with detailed alignment measurements. This information helps guide diagnosis, determine the most effective treatment plan and evaluate outcomes over time – ensuring care that is tailored specifically to your body and condition.
What is global alignment − and why does it matter?
Global alignment refers to how different parts of your body, such as your spine, hips and knees, work together to keep you balanced and help you function. When your body is properly aligned, you can move more easily and with less strain.
Think of your body like a puzzle. Each piece must fit together correctly for the whole picture to work well. EOSedge imaging helps physicians see how these pieces align so they can create treatment plans that restore balance and improve overall movement.
