Growing up in a refugee camp in Nepal, Nirmala Dahal witnessed firsthand how the lack of adequate health care could lead to needless suffering. It was then that she made a promise to herself that she would pursue a career helping those in need.

Today as a registered nurse in Holy Spirit Medical Center’s adult intensive care unit, she’s fulfilled that promise.

“I’m passionate about providing compassionate care, making a positive difference in patients’ lives and advocating for their health and well-being,” says Nirmala, who also serves as a medical interpreter for Nepali-speaking patients. “I make sure I comfort, support and empower my patients during the most vulnerable times.”

When the opportunity to join the health system arose three years ago, Nirmala said the decision was an easy one.

“I chose Penn State Health due to its diverse and inclusive environment that fosters a strong sense of community,” she said. “I felt welcomed. This is it. This is where I want to work for the rest of my life.”

It’s stories like these that drive our purpose.
