Breastfeeding is the healthiest choice

By choosing to breastfeed, you are making an investment in your health and the health of your baby. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while breastfeeding might be a lifestyle decision for some, it’s much more than that. It is the best source of nutrition for most infants, and it can reduce the risk for certain health conditions for both infants and mothers. Unfortunately, many mothers stop breastfeeding sooner than planned because they lack ongoing support. At Penn State Health, we created the Breastfeeding Program to support you and your baby throughout your breastfeeding experience.

Breastfeeding Program

Penn State Health Pediatrics and Penn State Health Women's Health created our program to provide the tools and emotional support needed to successfully breastfeed. Families have access to on-site lactation specialists, increased breastfeeding education resources and appointments in breastfeeding-friendly offices.

Mothers may schedule an appointment with a lactation consultant to get assistance with breastfeeding concerns, such as:

  • Prenatal breast or lactation questions
  • Latch difficulties
  • Nipple pain
  • Engorgement
  • Breast milk supply/oversupply
  • Plugged ducts
  • Breastfeeding multiples
  • Return to work
  • Breast pumping
  • Maternal medications and breastfeeding safety
  • Infant refusal to breastfeed or biting
