The Penn State Health Approach to Routine Midwifery Services
A Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM®) is a registered nurse with a master’s degree in midwifery and special certification and advanced training to offer personalized care during pregnancy and childbirth.
CNMs provide well-women care, including annual gynecological exams, family planning and contraception. They are licensed to prescribe a wide range of medications, like birth control and pain relief during labor and childbirth.
Prenatal Care Focused on Your Individual Needs
At Penn State Health, our CNMs work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and medical assistants.
If you are at low risk for complications during pregnancy and childbirth, you can choose to receive care from our team of certified nurse midwives. These experienced health care professionals provide collaborative care with our team of obstetricians and can attend deliveries on our Labor and Delivery Unit.
If your pregnancy requires more supervision, midwife services are overseen by a physician. You may receive midwifery-exclusive care while retaining access to the full range of support services offered by our Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, dietitians, support team and obstetricians.
Advanced Expertise
The CNMs at Penn State Health are registered nurses who graduated from nurse-midwifery programs accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education and passed the national certification exam of the American Midwifery Certification Board. Their extensive training includes hands-on clinical experience as well as an advanced degree.
