Patient Preparation

Inpatients:  A 12-16 hour fast is required

Outpatients only:  “Fasting is preferred but not required unless directed by the ordering provider. Lipid profiles should be ordered as fasting for patients on statins or other lipid lowering therapy. If ordered as fasting, collect the specimen after a 12-16hr fast.”
