“It’s really important to me that I help shape the next generation of medical professionals,” says Osiris Martinez Urquilla, core laboratory manager at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center.
In the 16 years she has worked at St. Joseph Medical Center, Osiris has built a career in medical lab science by always striving to learn more and achieve more. She is currently completing her master’s degree and credits her supportive work environment for much of her success.
“When I moved here from another country and was learning English, St. Joseph Medical Center opened the doors for me to start a career,” she said. “My coworkers gave me the courage to pursue my dreams and to push my limits.”
Starting as a lab technician working the night shift, Osiris was able to pursue her bachelor’s degree during the day. She reached for each goal knowing that her efforts were benefiting patients, supporting her team and advancing the academic health system’s mission to provide innovative care to her local community. Now, Osiris is paying it forward by using her leadership role to inspire the technicians and students following in her footsteps, helping them develop a similar commitment to learning and professional growth.
“I want to help them find their own passions, what they really want to do with their careers,” she said.
It’s stories like these that drive our purpose.
