The Department of Pathology at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is recruiting for an MD and/or PhD academic clinical microbiologist to serve as Medical Director of the Microbiology/Virology Laboratory. Laboratories within the Section include specimen processing, bacteriology, virology, molecular microbiology, mycobacteriology, mycology, special pathogens (Ebola Treatment Facility) and limited parasitology. Our laboratory supports the microbiology testing needs for the Penn State Health System hospitals and outpatient facilities that include the Hershey Medical Center, Cancer Institute, Children’s Hospital, and new hospital construction in Harrisburg and Lancaster. The Director will enjoy a close relationship with Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, Experimental Pathology and other clinical departments to include Internal Medicine / Infectious Disease and Orthopedics.

 

Applicants should have an established record of accomplishment within the field of clinical microbiology and demonstrated ability to lead an experienced group of microbiologists and technical staff. The Director will also direct the post-doctoral microbiology fellowship (non-CPEP) and teach in the College of Medicine (medical students), pathology residents, MLS students, and infectious disease fellows. Applicants must be involved in ongoing research in clinical microbiology; those with R01 or significant industry-sponsored research experience and interest are strongly encouraged to apply. The candidate is expected to maintain the already established highly effective clinical interaction with our Infectious Disease colleagues, support our Microbiology Fellowship and continue to expand translational research in Microbiology.

 

Applicants must be board eligible or board certified in Medical and Public Health Microbiology by the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) or other high complexity laboratory equivalent. We strongly encourage membership and active service in professional organizations to include the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
