The Penn State Hershey Heart & Vascular Institute’s Interventional Radiology department is a strong, team-oriented environment focused on delivering the safest, high-quality, evidence-based procedural nursing care in the region. Our nurses thrive on working in a positive atmosphere, with an extremely talented interdisciplinary team comprised of registered nurses, cardiovascular technologists, and interventional physicians. Our procedural area employs the use of four interventional laboratories, of which two are dedicated to neurovascular and two general interventional radiology procedures. The procedural nurse will obtain the competencies necessary to function in both. 

The procedural nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for adult and pediatric patients undergoing procedures in the interventional radiology suite. This specialized role includes responsibilities such as administering and maintaining moderate sedation, circulating, and coordinating scheduled procedures. Examples of the procedures performed in this area consist of AVM embolization, stroke intervention, carotid angioplasty and stent placement, aneurysm coiling, complex venous access, nephrostomy and biliary Interventions, TIPS and liver interventions, complex body embolization, as well as IVS filter placement and removal. 

This position requires rotating, on-call hours, which include approximately eight weeknights and one weekend per month and rotating holidays. Required response time while on-call is 30 minutes from time of page reception to arrival in the department. 


Registered Nurse with a license to practice professional nursing in the state of Pennsylvania or a Registered Nurse from another state with a Temporary PA Practice Permit 

6 months of experience working as a RN 


Previous Interventional Radiology experience preferred 

Experience administering Moderate Sedation preferred 

Possess knowledge of critical care, to include advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, and basic cardiopulmonary life support certification 

BSN preferred 

RN with three or more years of critical care experience within the last two years


Able to sit occasionally; stand constantly; walk frequently. 

Able to lift/carry 0-10 lbs frequently; 11-50 lbs occasionally. 

Able to push/pull 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-75 lbs occasionally. 

Able to climb occasionally; reach constantly. 

Able to use hand for simple/firm grasping.
