JOB SUMMARY:

Registered Nurses on this team will be a part of a 14-bed service-line based medical-surgical unit. Patients typically are established Family and Community Medicine patients from one of the academic Family and Community Medicine medical group clinics. Patients on this unit are admitted from the Emergency Department or clinic with the typical array of problems requiring an acute care stay such as heart failure, pneumonia, liver failure, pancreatitis etc. This unit is staffed with an attending physician, medical residents, and two CRNPs in addition to staff nurses and patient care assistants. The average length of stay for patients is at least 4 days.

RNs are responsible to assess the biopsychosocial nursing need of patients through interview and observations. Establish goals and priorities of nursing care. Develop a written plan of nursing care, which includes patient teaching and discharge planning. Implement nursing plan through the giving of direct care and/or by delegating to other professional and non-professional staff. Responsible for documentation of care given and patient progress. Transcribe and execute physician's orders accurately and promptly. Communicate patients’ progress and needs to appropriate physician. Keeps supervisor informed of unit activity and condition of patients. Collaborate effectively with the medical staff in matters of patient care. Seeks assistance from supervisor as necessary in clinical problem solving, execution of procedures and use of equipment. Assumes charge nurse responsibility when requested. Communicate patient needs and plan of care to other nurses through shift reports, care plans, and patient conferences. Assist in teaching patient care procedures to other nursing staff members as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

Currently licensed to practice as a registered nurse by State of employment

AHA BLS prior to end of orientation period

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):

PICC Trained

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Able to sit occasionally; stand constantly; walk frequently.

Able to lift/carry 0-10 lbs frequently; 11-50 lbs occasionally.

Able to push/pull 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-75 lbs occasionally.

Able to climb occasionally; reach constantly.

Able to use hand for simple/firm grasping.
