The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for performing complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Scientists will identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, as well as aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
The Special Hematology Lab provides the following services:
Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry for leukemia/lymphoma/ PNH/lymphocyte subset analysis
Hepatitis C RNA quantitation and genotyping
HIV viral load and genotyping for drug resistance
Factor VIII antigen assay (von Willebrand factor antigen) and ristocetin CoFactor assay (von willebrand factor activity)
Specialized platelet function testing (platelet function screen by PFA-100 and platelet aggregation)
Technical assistance for bone marrow collection procedures and staining of bone marrow aspirate slides.
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science required.
MLS (ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist, American Society of Clinical Pathology, CLT (HHS) Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Health and Human Services Certification, and/or category specific technologist certifications offered by the American Society of Pathology such as BB (ASCP), C(ASCP), H(ASCP), M(ASCP), and MB(ASCP) required.
Must be ASCP Certified within one year of employment at the Penn State Hershey Department of Pathology.
Good customer service and communication skills required
Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize work.
Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex: National Association Credential Evaluations Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicants is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.
