The Lab Couriers are responsible for driving a Hershey Medical Center lab courier vehicle to assigned clinic routes. Once at the clinic sites Couriers pickup patient specimens and then deliver mail, patient reports, and supplies to various hospital department and practice sites. These individuals perform venipunctures on adult and pediatric hospital patients and home bound patients in a variety of settings including private homes, nursing homes, clinics etc.
Additional responsibilities include retrieving blood products from various outside locations and delivering to the blood bank and maintaining a courier log to document time in/time out and specimens retrieved. Couriers also participate in investigating unclear physician orders for lab services and processing laboratory specimens for analysis and entering into the lab computer system.
Couriers service a large geographical area and could involve traveling distances up to an hour and a half from the Medical Center.
High School Diploma or GED required.
6 months of phlebotomy experience required
A valid Driver’s License with no moving violations within the past year.
Ability to read, comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
Simple use of formulas, charts, tables, specification and schedules.
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to interact with patients.
Bedside glucose experiences preferred.
Courier experience preferred.
Able to sit & walk frequently; stand occasionally.
Able to lift/carry 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally.
Able to push/pull 0-10 lbs frequently.
Able to climb occasionally; reach constantly.
Able to use hands for simple/firm grasping.
