The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine seeks an Assistant Professor/academic medical microbiologist faculty member to join the Division of Clinical Pathology to serve as Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. This is a new position and an exciting opportunity to work with the Director of Microbiology to continue to build a unified laboratory covering specimen processing, bacteriology, virology, molecular microbiology, mycobacteriology, mycology, special pathogens (Ebola Treatment Facility), limited parasitology, and immunoserology. Shared responsibilities include technical and clinical oversight of the laboratory, and teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents, fellows, microbiology postdocs, and medical laboratory scientists. The laboratory supports the microbiology testing needs for the Penn State Health System hospitals and outpatient facilities that include the Hershey Medical Center, Cancer Institute, Children’s Hospital, as well as outreach/referral testing from hospitals in nearby Harrisburg and Lancaster.

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree (M.D, D.O. and/or Ph.D), postdoctoral training in an accredited microbiology fellowship program and be board-certified/ eligible in Medical Microbiology by either the American Board of Pathology or American Board of Medical Microbiology. Candidates with expertise/experience in immunoserology and molecular diagnostic test implementation and development are preferred. Excellent teaching skills, experience with translational research and involvement with national professional organizations is desirable.
